BMI Calculation Formula

BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight by the square of their height. The formula differs slightly depending on the unit system:

Metric Units (kg/m)

Standard scientific formula.

  • BMI = Weight (kg) / [Height (m)]2
  • Example: 70kg / (1.75m × 1.75m) = 22.86

Imperial Units (lb/in)

Requires a conversion factor of 703.

  • BMI = 703 × Weight (lbs) / [Height (in)]2
  • Example: 703 × 154lbs / (69" × 69") = 22.7

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a "Healthy" BMI range?
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. Below 18.5 is Underweight, 25.0–29.9 is Overweight, and 30.0 or higher is considered Obese.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes or bodybuilders with high muscle mass may be categorized as "Overweight" or "Obese" despite having very low body fat and being in excellent health.
Does BMI differ for men and women?
The standard BMI formula and categories are the same for both adult men and women. However, women naturally tend to have more body fat than men at the same BMI.
Why does BMI matter?
A high BMI is often correlated with increased risk for chronic conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. It is a quick "first step" indicator for doctors.
Can I calculate BMI for children?
While the formula is the same, the interpretation is different. For children and teens (ages 2-19), BMI is compared against percentiles for their specific age and gender, rather than fixed cut-off numbers.
Is the Nexli BMI Calculator free?
Yes, the Nexli BMI Calculator is 100% free to use for personal health monitoring.
